Abstract

This paper focuses on a topic which involves numerous linguistic cases of doubt: the declension of loan words. In order to shed new light on the complex network of different factors that determine number and case inflection of loan words in German, various types of data are used: synchronic and diachronic corpus data, data from a questionnaire study and metalinguistic discussions of laypersons. It is argued that the declension of loan words is particularly prone to language change. Three scenarios are discussed: Morphological integration (e. g. Sauna-s > Saun-en ‘sauna-PL’), morphological disintegration due to the prestige of borrowed forms (e. g. Cappuccino-s > Cappuccin-i ‘cappuccino-PL’), and morphological disintegration due to frequency loss (e. g. d-es Tabernakel-s > d-es Tabernakel-Ø ‘the-GEN.SG tabernacle-GEN.SG’).
