Abstract
This paper deals with the variation of umlaut use in the comparison of Modern German adjectives, which constitutes a linguistic case of doubt that has hardly received any attention in the literature. Relying on diachronic and synchronic data, it is argued that the use of umlaut comparison is mainly determined by token frequency, with high-frequency items preserving umlaut (e. g., alt ‘old’: älter – am ältesten) and low-frequency ones eliminating it in the long-run (e. g., blass ‘pale’: blässer, am blässesten > blasser, am blassesten). The instances of analogical extension of umlaut comparison in non-standard usage (e. g., klärer ‘clearer’, döfer ‘more stupid’) are better accounted for in a schema approach. Finally, metalinguistic comments in online boards are considered in order to round off the picture.
