Abstract
Cases of doubt in grammar are hardly ever a topic in German lessons and teacher training. This is the reason why this article looks into the question whether grammatical cases of doubt are used by pupils at all and how German teachers and trainee teachers deal with cases of doubt in texts. The databank consists of 150 stories written by ten-year-olds (study 1). On the other hand there are data of 161 teachers or trainee teachers who were asked to mark a text interspersed with obvious grammar mistakes and cases of doubt (study 2). The evaluation of study 1 shows that, unlike grammatical mistakes, cases of doubt are hardly ever in texts written by pupils. This may be the reason why grammatical cases of doubt are not an issue in classroom routine. The analysis of the data of the second study group shows (as could be expected) that the acceptance of cases of doubt differs widely in the test group. Cases of doubt are quite often treated as system errors.
