Abstract

Regionally conditioned linguistic cases of doubt represent a special challenge for teachers and school students. Being able to use regional and standard variants in the appropriate situations requires a fully developed competence regarding linguistic systems and their applications to different registers. This paper discusses the emergence of regionally conditioned cases of doubt and explains how language variation is handled in German schools. We argue for an extension of the skills that are specified in the core curricula of the federal states. Understood as opportunities for learning, cases of doubt become a chance rather than a challenge as they are suited for imparting a more nuanced knowledge of the regional and standard varieties and their application. Thereby, students can extend their own capacity to communicate. The prerequisite would be that teachers are provided with a fundamental education in language variation and change that enables them to deal with such cases of doubt in a constructive way. The paper concludes with an overview of several research tools that can be helpful in solving regionally conditioned cases of doubt.
