Abstract
In the course of grammatical integration of anglicisms into the German language, every nominal anglicism has to be assigned a grammatical gender. Sometimes, an anglicism is assigned to two distinct genders such as smiley, which, in German, can be used as a neuter or masculine noun. Such instances of gender variance lead to doubts regarding their correct usage. In class, these doubts can serve as an impulse for reflecting upon language and linguistic norms, as well as a motive for the analysis of language data. Pupils learn to accept linguistic variance and they are introduced to the scientific analysis of language. In this paper, we present some ideas for the didactic implementation of gender assignment that have been tested in the classroom. The presentation of the didactic material is preceded by a short overview of the most relevant theoretical background such as the main gender assignment rules and an explanation for some instances of gender variance.
