Abstract: Dictionary criticism as a subdiscipline of dictionary research has itself been the object of critical analysis. Nielsen (2009a) ascribes the low ranking of dictionary reviews in academic discourse to the fact that the dictionary analysis, description and evaluation presented in reviews are not based on a set of theoretical and methodological guidelines. Given this critique, the main goal of this article is to develop a heuristic framework of general theoretical and methodological principles that could function as the basis for dictionary reviewing and the design of the detailed information provided in dictionary reviews. The proposed framework for dictionary reviewing and the design of reviews is largely based on Nielsen (2009a) and Svensén (2009), but it is much broader in its theoretical and methodological assumptions as it incorporates a variety of relevant approaches from a number of relevant (sub)disciplines to enrich the theoretical and methodological principles of dictionary reviewing and the design of reviews.
