Abstract: The following article focuses on the criticism of online mono-, bi- and multilingual dictionaries of idioms for German with the aim to give some fundamental guidelines for compiling new ones for German as a foreign language. After a short introduction of the dictionary criticism of printed dictionaries of idioms and an overview of the treatment of different idioms in German learner's dictionaries, - the so called "phraseography-check" of Kuhn (2003) -, the data on idiomatic expressions in the three best-known online monolingual dictionaries for German (duden.de, elexico, DWDS) is shortly reviewed to demonstrate the needs for specialised dictionaries for didactic purposes. The third section is dedicated to the current state and the respective criticism of electronic phraseography with German at the beginning of the 21st century. There are fortunately already some pioneering online multilingual resources (EPHRAS and SprichWort-Plattform) on this field. At the end of the third section the article refers to the so called "criteria-catalogue" of online dictionary criticism of Kemmer (2010). The last section sums up some suggestions for the compilation of innovative online learner's dictionaries of idioms.
