Abstract: |
The article is essentially a plea to policy makers and funding bodies to acknowledge and fund accordingly the high quality, historical scholarly period dictionaries of German currently in progress and to ensure that they are or become available online in open access and do not share the same fate as the recently terminated new edition of Grimms' dictionary of New High German. Talk of a crisis in German historical lexicography is unfounded and must not become a selffulfilling prophecy. While in the digital age the computer is an absolutely essential tool in all aspects of lexicographical work, the essence of which remains editorial quality, it continues to be humans who programme the computer, who compile and who use historical scholarly dictionaries. A survey of the extensive Germanlanguage research on (historical) lexicography and a review of many dictionary projects recently completed or still underway is designed to underpin these arguments. |
