Abstract: Since valency (or complementation) is an important source of errors for foreign learners of English, valency patterns of verbs, adjectives and nouns are an important aspect of EFL lexicography. English learners' dictionaries have used a number of systems for including this type of information, ranging from Hornby's verb patterns in the early OALD to transparent coding systems or pattern illustrations in the current generation of these dictionaries. The paper outlines the basic principles of the valency description provided in a special valency dictionary such as the Valency Dictionary of English (VDE) and the key features of the Erlangen Valency Patternbank, an on-line research tool based on the VDE. Since the Patternbank can be regarded as a first step towards an electronic valency dictionary for learners of English, a number of changes to make the information more immediately accessible and interpretable are discussed that may seem appropriate with respect to creating a pedagogic valency e-dictionary.
