Abstract: The purpose of this article is to investigate the state, trends and perspectives of French pedagogical lexicography at the turn of the third millennium. The methodology is based on a functional approach to lexicography as an independent discipline aimed at the development of needs-adapted lexicographic tools. It is also based on a critical analysis of the concept of pedagogical lexicography, on the border line between communicative user-needs (helping users with data to solve problems while using the language simply in order to communicate), and cognitive user-needs (helping users with data to solve problems when studying the language in order to learn its use and system, either punctually or more systematically). In the French tradition, a clear cut distinction is being made between dictionaries for users with French as a native language (FLM) and users with French as a foreign or second language (FLE(S)). It is argued that this distinction has been harmful to the development of transformative theories for both kinds of dictionaries. The first part of the investigation includes a critical study of selected dictionaries which have marked the development of French paper-based pedagogical lexicography for the better and for the worse, while the second part focuses on the development of electronic and internet lexicography, and on the functional transformation of conventional lexicographic tools into user-driven multifunctional tools.
