Abstract: With English learner lexicography going back to the 1940s, it has gone through quite a number of developmental stages. In this article, we would like to impose six key requirements that a modern advanced learner's dictionary should satisfy: these requirements concern the use of corpus material, the presentation of information on meaning, syntactic patterns and collocations, inclusion of onomasiological elements and lemmatization policy. Only if these demands are met, can innovation be said to equal improvement.
