By studying a substantial quantity of actual usage of a syntactically simple word, definitional issues such as variability, decidibility, relatedness, and the relative frequency of different meaning categories can be highlighted. The paper offers a case study in the computational analysis of all occurrences of a particular word in a large corpus of contemporary texts, as a means of discovering facts about meaning and use in the contemporary language. |
