This reports on our work withe the machine-readable version of LDOCE, the Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English, and on some of the access problems we were confronted with after we had carried out two major operations on this dictionary file: first, we had to convert the file into a data base suitable for interrogation by means of the information storage and retrieval package available on our mainframe (IBM's STAIRS); second, we had to REWRITE the LDOCE grammatical codes appearing in the file and in the printed dictionary so as to make each individual code accessible to STAIRS searches, and later on to similar searches on a personal computer. Focusing on the LDOCE codes for verb complementation, this paper deals with searching strategies which we developed in order to come to grips with the LDOCE codes for verbs. |
