Abstract: The basic premise of the CODITEXT project is that standard bilingual (and monolingual) dictionaries, while of considerable value, have shortcomings when used by people with a relatively low level of experience in their use and are not perfect tools even in the hands of expert practitioners. As a result, there is a valid reason for using an automated dictionary. CODITEXT aims to start from a dictionary that is not too different in form from normal dictionaries, but has the advantages of automation, such as comprehensiveness, rapid revision, clarity, and tailoring to individual requirements, and then steadily improve on this by moulding the database in response to users' activities. There is also an intention to attempt the automation of the updating process.
