Abstract: The authors draw up a typological sketch of the lexical databases available on the Internet, to which they add qualitative and quantitative studies of the language pair German-English. Finally they discuss media-specific features such as hypertextualisation, the use of multimedia and search facilities, using typical examples. It is clear that most of the dictionaries studied do not come close to exhausting the possibilites of the medium and are quaitatively [sic!] inferior to professional electronic offline dictionaries. However, the advantages of the online medium of the Internet can be seen in rapidly growing and changing areas of vocabulary, e.g. terminological databases for natural sciences and computer science. There are also a number of interesting aspects of joint dictionary projects which are facilitated by the combination of information and communication services in the Internet. These new forms of dictionary making document not only the need for the exchange of knowledge on a global scale, but they also show an interest and enjoyment in the communication about language.
