This article examines recent developments in the field of portable electronic translators with special reference to Langenscheidt's pocket dictionary "alpha 8". It takes a critical look at the use of this device as a reference-work and learning aid and discusses its advantages and shortcomings as compared with conventional dictionaries. It also outlines the potential refinement of such devices within the framework of developments in microcomputer technology. |
