Abstract: The paper presents an innovative description of verb valency in an electronic learner's dictionary for the German and Italian languages (ELDIT). It fully exploits the various possibilities of multimedia and hypertext technology and aims at a learner-friendly description of a very complex linguistic research field, namely verb valency, to a specific target group. This means that, among other things, hyperlinks, colors and animations are used for the visualization of information, that linguistic information is explained in a simple and comprehensible way without complicated technical terminology and cryptic abbreviations, and that scientific insights are translated into a language which is adequate to the learners.
