Abstract: Pocket electronic dictionaries are a relatively new type of dictionary, having been in existence for just a few years, and their range and quality are increasing. This is a study of their use by students in a tertiary education institution in Hong Kong. It outlines the features of the dictionaries, describes their use, and gives students' views. While students are aware of the weaknesses of these dictionaries, they are attracted by their portability, speed and relative ease of use, and also the availability of sound. Interviews with teachers indicate that they are more concerned about the weaknesses, although the potential for the use of these dictionaries in language learning is recognized.
