Abstract: The authors are members of a committee charged with establishing a Hebrew-English data processing dictionary, based primarily on the I.S.O.'s extensive English-French vocabulary. The committee is sponsored by the Israel Institute of Standardization (I.I.S.) and the Academy of the Hebrew language. In order to expedite the committee's work, a time-shared, text processing system has been developed, using bilingual Hebrew-English screen terminals and a laser printer. The committee's decisions are immediately keyed into a terminal located in the conference room, and are stored in a computer file, available for current updating and improving, leading up to the dictionary's edition. Particular features of the Hebrew language are: Special script, right-to-left writing, diacritical marks for vowels, frequent dual spelling. Therefore special programs provide line inversion, bilingual indexing, and partial vocalization. These features are illustrated in the paper. The system may be of interest to those concerned with automated creation of multilingual, multiscript dictionaries and glossaries, involving numerous diacritical marks and/or non-Latin scripts such as Greek, Arabic or Russian.
