Abstract: The present study aims at revealing the effects of different dictionary interfaces on L2 learners' look-up beahvior. Despite its increasing popularity among language learners, research has shown that there are concerns about the use of electronic dictionaries. One of such concerns stems from the fact that electronic dictionaries do not present their illustrative examples by default, while printed dictionaries show them linearly. Focusing on the presentation style of illustrative examples, the author used eye-tracking technology combined with a translation task in order to reveal the process of microstructure search with different interfaces and compared the task performance. The task was designed with two independant variables (folded/unfolded presentation of illustrative examples, types of dictionary) to observe how look-up behavior changes in both monolingual and bilingual dictionary interfaces. Statistically significant differences were recorded for frequency of referance and gaze duration.
