Abstract: Recently, there has been increasing interest in learner autonomy and autonomous language learning strategies. At the same time, microprocessor-based devices with potential language-learning applications (e.g., electronic dictionaries) are becoming cheaper, more powerful and more portable. Are these gadgets and gizmos, as some might call them, just gimmicks? Or are they godsends-potentially powerful tools for autonomous language learners?
