Abstract: This paper discusses different types of classifications of multiword combinations in dictionaries and in the linguistic literature. In the main part of the paper we present proposals for the classification of multiword combinations in different kinds of dictionaries, both printed and electronic dictionaries. For the polyfunctional monolingual dictionary we argue for the classical solution with very few classes (1 to 4). For some monofunctional dictionaries, e.g. reception dictionaries, the dictionary user does not need data about the type of fixed expression, only about the meaning. But in a dictionary with the focus on cognitive needs we need a more accurate classification. Therefore a former classification of only four categories has been replaced by a classification of 20 categories. A much more precise classification is achieved by a differentiation of the term idiom, but also by other distinctions, e.g. between idiomacy and non-idiomacy within certain categories.
