Abstract: This paper describes the compilation of an etymological dictionary of English loanwords in Hong Kong Cantonese and the conversion of the database for the dictionary into an online version. Loanwords are interesting and important because they document language contact. The contact between English and Cantonese has led to the inclusion of a lot of English loanwords in the Cantonese lexicon. These loanwords not only reveal interesting sociolinguistic features of the two languages in contact, but also reflect the diachronic process of linguistic borrowing. The compilation of an etymological dictionary of English loanwords in Hong Kong Cantonese aims to provide some details of the process of language contact from a historical as well as synchronic perspective. The entries of English loanwords in this dictionary were mainly collected from printed materials, ranging from published dictionaries, books, academic journal articles, student theses and dissertations, to local newspapers, tabloid magazines, youth magazines, and internet forum discussion groups. A total of around 700 entries spanning over 180 years were compiled. Each loanword entry consists of detailed annotation regarding its pronunciation, meaning in Cantonese, as well as all the references in which the loanword has been documented. While the printed version of the etymological dictionary is underway, an online version has been developed and is already available for public access. This paper is to describe both.
