Abstract: This paper reports on an empirical investigation into aspects of mobile dictionary use among Thai university students. The subjects were a population of 250 university students of King Mongkut's Institute of Technology Ladkrabang (KMITL), Thailand. SPSS for MS WINDOWS was used to analyse the data from questionnaires. The survey explores the different types of electronic bilingual dictionaries on mobile phones currently available in Thailand. It was found that the three dictionary apps for smart phones were widely used. In order to assess the appropriateness of the information contained in the entry, these three apps on smart phones were evaluated in terms of their main features, presentation and performance and their potential in English language learning. It draws attention to their benefits and demerits as a general introduction to a more detailed consideration of changes that would need to be made to apps for smart phones in order that Thai learners of English could use them more effectively. The results can be of direct use in the improvement of dictionaries on mobile phones for Thai users.
