Abstract: This paper examines words of Southeast Asian origin in the Oxford English Dictionary (OED). It begins with a brief overview of the OED's editorial policies with regard to non-British words, which have undergone several changes throughout the dictionary's long history. It then describes Southeast Asian words included in the OED's third and latest edition, which is currently undergoing a thorough revision and is available on the Internet through OED Online. The focus will then move to recent efforts to widen the OED’s coverage of Southeast Asian Englishes. The paper concludes with a discussion of the key issues that need to be addressed to ensure adequate treatment of Southeast Asian and other World Englishes in the OED: overcoming the shortage of written resources, providing better regional labelling, and including words and meanings of more current usage, as well as lexical innovations beyond simple borrowing.
