Abstract: The study presented in this paper is based on a database containing all the adverbs with the status of undefined run-ons that can be found under the letter A in OALD8. Since finding the meaning of an unfamiliar word is of primary importance to any dictionary user, it was then tested whether online dictionaries could help the users of an existing monolingual dictionary to find definitions. Online dictionaries providing definitions of adverbs were investigated to determine which dictionary appears most frequently. The definitions of adverbs found in these dictionaries were closely studied to see how useful and informative they can be in the look-up process. Online dictionaries offer a wide range of definition types, from circular definitions, synonym definitions and traditional definitions, which are sometimes combined with synonym definitions, to full-sentence definitions, a range that is in line with the definition types found in print dictionaries. The main problem that should be highlighted is the absence of information about the target users of online dictionaries because such resources may be used by native speakers of English without particular problems; non-native speakers, however, may experience difficulty, since many online dictionaries require excellent linguistic judgement from their users. There is certainly much room for improvement regarding the method of adverb definition in online dictionaries (e.g., avoidance of circular definitions, in the absence of space constraints; avoidance of infrequently used adverbs in synonym definitions), which could contribute enormously to the usability and user-friendliness of online dictionaries.
