Abstract: Microsoft Windows PCs are losing their competitive edge against iPhones, smart phones and Wi-Fi tablets. It is in the year 2012 that the three top-selling 7- to 8-inch tablets appeared and attracted the attention of all mobile device users. In this paper I will examine and discuss how edictionary contents designed for the PC platform should be adjusted or redesigned to fit into the smaller tablet platform. At first, I will review how mobile devices are used in academic fields, and make a survey of online dictionary websites and their device apps. Then follows an argument of the next-generation e-dictionaries (NGE). Both native and non-native speakers of English should refer to NGE database which will help them make their use of English intelligible in the global communication network. Among many mobile devices, of special references are the three tablets, Amazon Kindle Fire HD, Apple iPad mini, and Google Nexus 7.
