Abstract: The quality of specialised lexicography has not improved proportionally with its growing number of publications (Tarp, 2012), and neither has that of the online dictionaries (Kwary, 2012). This is especially true of bilingual (Chinese/English) or multilingual sport and exercise science dictionaries in China. Through an examination of the megastructure and microstructure of two Chinese/English sport and exercise science dictionaries - Ti Yu Ke Xue Ci Dian (Sport Science Dictionary, 2000) and Ti Yu Da Ci Dian (Mega Sport Dictionary, 1984), the authors intend to present variables such as the lemma selection, entry length, definition writing, and equivalent selection from these two dictionaries and to address their existing problems such as the different size of headword selection from different sub-fields and very different length of most entries, inappropriate equivalent selection and inaccurate definition writing. These problems could be avoided or solved by exploiting the Internet and other technologies. The authors propose that scientists and specialists from multiple disciplines - biomechanics, medicine, linguistics, translation studies, etc. - collaborate to compile an online bilingual or multilingual dictionary of sport and exercise science by applying specialised lexicographical theory and guidelines into practice and by incorporating the latest technologies into specialised dictionary making.
