Abstract: This book examines children’ participation in conversations about their own cancer treatment throughout uncertain trajectories at a hospital in Barcelona, Catalonia (Spain). I follow the cancer trajectories of a group of seventeen children and young people as social and medical pivotal moments in their lives unfold, from the events leading to diagnosis to treatment, remission, relapse, cure or death. My investigation of children’s cancer trajectories combines ethnographic descriptions of social and medical events with detailed analyses of questions that children asked their clinicians during videotaped medical interactions. Relying on a multi-method approach, I illustrate the diversity and commonality in the ways in which these cancer patients attempt to be involved in conversations about their own treatment and ultimately influence treatment decisions.
