General bilingual dictionaries tend to cater for the needs of all users, i.e. both native and non-native speakers of either language. To maximize their usefulness for non-native users, they need to be 'learnerized', i.e. adapted to the needs of specific learner groups. Based on the observation that learners' phraseological needs are acute and only imperfectly met by existing general bilingual dictionaries, the current study suggests ways of improving the coverage, accessibility, translation and illustration of phraseological
units, in particular metadiscursive bundles whose lexicographic treatment poses serious limitations. The tool described is a web-based French-English bilingual dictionary specifically aimed at advanced French-speaking learners and trainee translators, which doubles as a learning tool thanks to the integration of tailor-made notes and exercises informed by learner corpus data. The focus is on the category of metadiscursive bundles, which raises interesting questions, in particular as regards the notion of translation equivalents in bilingual dictionaries. |
