Abstract: A bilingual dictionary with Afrikaans and German as language pair has a vast field to cover within the South African environment. This is due to the small but diverse potential target user group of such a dictionary. In this paper a few aspects of this situation of use will be discussed. The main focus, however, will be on the use of these dictionaries within a broad pedagogical and translation environment. In this regard there are three important questions to which one has to respond. They are: What do we have? What do we need? What should we do to get what we need? This paper suggests that lexicography does not need a new theory for online dictionaries but that existing theory can be adapted to include both printed and online dicitonaries in its scope. With regard to online dictionaries the notion of one database from which different dictionaries can be extracted is discussed and suggestions are made for some aspects of the microstructure of online dictionaries.
