Abstract
Research in the field of linguistic cases of doubt often struggles with the perceived heterogeneity of its possible objects. The aim of this paper is to take a closer look at the phenomena in question and suggest an alternative model of cases of doubt based on the new concept of superposition. First, we will revisit common definitions of cases of doubt in order to emphasize the double role that semantics plays in this context. As will be pointed out, cases of doubt are characterized by informational deficits which should not be put on the same level as functional-semantic equivalence. This clearly sets them apart from other types of variants and, at the same time, enables us to connect them to crucial debates in the fields of psycholinguistics and language acquisition.
