Abstract
This study focuses on the syntactic features of emotion expression in German and Russian cultures. Genuine and routine expressions of feelings and emotions are exemplified in the complimenting situations. 32 compliments (and 23 compliment responses) paid in direct interaction of native Russian and German speakers were noted down by the author amid her familiar surroundings and used in two written questionnaires. 80 respondents were asked to evaluate whether certain culture-authentic compliments were felicitous; compliment responses were collected from 106 respondents. According to the data obtained, the compliments paid on the personal qualities of the addressee in a non-agentive way were in most cases responded very briefly; moreover, they were frequently not identified as compliments by both Russian and German native speakers. The compliments characterized as the most felicitous ones differed between the cultures: the Germans ranked high the compliments with multiple agents, the Russians those compliments which did not address the personal traits and, consequently, were non-agentive. The implications of the findings are discussed in relation to the teaching pragmatics of second or foreign language.
