Abstract

The article describes the cautious approach towards the term "bolsón de pobreza" by means of internet search in South and Central American text documents. The synonymic deduction of the meaning proves to be especially abundant. However, it was an accidental consultation of the dictionary that revealed an appropriate meaning. The predominant meaning element in the term "bolsón de pobreza", or "bolsa de pobreza" respectively, is deducible from the geological phenomenon of "Erztasche". Hence, it is a rendering of the meaning element "Verdichtung" from a geological and mineral phenomenon to a social one. This strong and easily comprehensible meaning motivation makes the author give up his initial skepticism towards the translation equivalent "Armutstasche". He makes the case for introducing this term into German language use.
