Abstract
Speakers of Spanish typically stress in discourse the ingressive phase (i. e., the starting point of the action) more often than speakers of German do (Cartagena/Gauger 1989 a: 410/412, Sánchez Nieto, 2003, 2005). The aim of this paper is to investigate to what extent professional and student translators from German into Spanish maintain this discursive convention, especially the case of empezar a + infinitive. For this purpose, the main findings of Hispanic Studies in the field of inchoative periphrasis description are highlighted, giving particular emphasis to the description of empezar/comenzar a + infinitive). The data from two parallel corpora with extracts of literary translations (in the first case by professional and in the second case by student translators) are qualitatively and quantitatively analyzed. The results point to the fact that stressing the ingressive phase through the use of empezar/comenzar a + infinitive when translating from German into Spanish is a case of optional explicitation and that this translation strategy occurs mainly in sequences with very specific narrative patterns.
