Abstract

This article deals with the use of Kürze (‘brevity’) in the rhetorical tradition and domains of linguistic description (phonology, graphemics, lexicology, syntax, text linguistics). First, I analyze how terms such as “Kurzvokal” (‘short vowel’), “Kurzschrift”, (‘shorthand’), “Kurzwort” (‘clipped/shortened word, abbreviation’) and “Kurzsatz” (‘short sentence’) are shaped and defined in German linguistics. I then focus on similarities and differences as to emergence, meaning and function of Kürze in these linguistic subdisciplines. Kürze is shown to be a complex linguistic notion, not in all instances clearly distinct from the non-technical meaning in general language. I conclude by briefly discussing the transfer of general language lexical items into scientific terminology.
